Early Morning Villanelle

Standard

DSC05672The chipmunk stands up tall and peeks inside
On the back edge of the yard I see the deer
The rabbit senses danger, runs to hide

The crows light on the tree where they preside
Their incessant cawing fills my ear
The chipmunk stands up tall and peeks inside

Lippity lippity — rabbit’s easy stride
Pauses — pauses … What does he hear?
The rabbit senses danger, runs to hide

In early morning, I am fortified
With prayers and readings that I hold quite dear
The chipmunk stands up tall and peeks inside

I watch the goings-on of the outside
Listening for God’s whisper in my ear
The rabbit senses danger, runs to hide

So very thankful for this countryside
I share with creatures who come from far and near
The chipmunk stands up tall and peeks inside
The rabbit senses danger, runs to hide

Today’s Daily Post Photo Challenge was Morning.

Quite honestly, I was struggling with the Villanelle, a highly structured poem, and I am a highly UNstructured person.

So I thought, could I describe my typical mornings in a Villanelle?

I’m the first one up in the morning. I sit with my coffee and my Bible on the sunporch, where I can watch the goings-on outside. Lately, I have had a bunny hop leisurely up the ramp looking for I-don’t-know-what on the deck. I can often snap a picture of him before he bolts at some unseen danger that he senses.

On the other hand, the chipmunk, bold as bold can be, pauses every day to peek in at me. I often wonder — if I left the screen door open, would he come right in to visit? But he’s quick –darting here and there — and I have yet to capture him on my camera.

Villanelle rhyme scheme: A1 b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 / a b A2 / a b A1 A2.

Lines 1 and 3 are repeated at the end of the succeeding stanzas. Stanza #6 ends with both lines.
