A Kick in the Head

At a thrift store a month or so ago, I found a ratty paperback copy of “A Kick in the Head: An Everyday Guide to Poetic Forms” by Paul B. Janeczko.IMG_9918

I’m not the greatest poet, but I love poetry — and I fell in love with this book.

I had also been struggling with writing and love a good challenge, so I challenged myself to write one of each of the poetic forms found in the book. With a few days off here and there, I managed to complete the challenge.

Below is a list of the poetic forms. If you click on them, you’ll find my contribution to that form.

  1. Couplet
  2. Tercet
  3. Quatrain
  4. Haiku
  5. Senryu
  6. Tanka
  7. Cinquain
  8. Clerihew
  9. Limerick
  10. Roundel
  11. Double Dactyl
  12. Triolet
  13. Sonnet
  14. Villanelle
  15. Opposites
  16. Riddle
  17. Ode
  18. Acrostic
  19. Concrete
  20. Epitaph
  21. Elegy  — eulogy, elegy — I confess. I don’t know the difference.
  22. Found
  23. Persona
  24. Poem of Address
  25. Ballad
  26. Blues
  27. List
  28. Aubade
  29. Pantoum

This was so fun, I may have to try it again sometime.

Next challenge, though, will be a couplet and a photo to go with WordPress’s Daily Prompt.

30 days of cou-PIC-let. Let’s do this.
