Secret Caverns

Standard

There once was a hole in the ground
That was found because cows gathered ’round
The bit of cool air
That blew from down there —
Kitschy roadside America underground.

One of my favorite local attractions is Secret Caverns located in Howe’s Cave, NY — not to be confused with Howe Caverns, also located in Howe’s Cave, NY.

It really was discovered because a farmer noticed on hot summer days that the cows gathered in one corner of the field near a hole. I think a cow or two even fell in.

Secret Caverns doesn’t it take itself too seriously. The billboards leading to it are busy, colorful, folksy.

Plus it has an underground waterfall and kids are allowed to stand under it.
