Morning Swim — A Sonnet

Standard

The blue and glassy surface beckons me
Dive in! Dive in! I’m waiting for you, friend!
And so begins a swim soliloquy
A splash, a stroke, another, to the end

My rhythmic kicking, rhythmic pulling, breath —
The bubbles racing up past cheek and ear
This plunge: my morning baptism and death
This swim: my resurrection so so dear

To climb upon this horizontal plane
In reaching, holding, pulling, pushing past
I organize my thoughts and think again
Preparing for the day and its repast

Dripping sweat and chlorine when I’m done
The day is good, and it’s only begun
